School rugby team takes it all off for cancer
They were invited to represent Toti and their country, a privilege never before awarded to a South African team.
Although busy with their own fundraising efforts to play in Portugal, Kuswag Skool’s first rugby team raised and donated R1,000 to Cansa.
The players and coaches paid to have their heads shaved by Liza Thesmer and Susan Fourie of Headwaves at the school on Tuesday, 10 February.
“Each player paid to have a haircut, which promoted unity in the team ahead of our trip to Portugal,” said assistant coach, Willem Swanepoel.
“The community has helped us with our fundraising efforts and we felt it was important to give back.
It is a privilege for us to go to Portugal to play. Many children this age are fighting cancer and they would love to be able to throw a rugby ball around.”
The donation was presented to Cansa representatives, Errol and Sharon-Ann Theron, who thanked the team for their contribution, before the boys lined up for their new look.
The team will make history when they take off for Portugal on 23 March to participate in an international junior rugby festival where more than 32 countries will be represented.
They were invited to represent Toti and their country, a privilege never before awarded to a South African team.
Seven rugby pitches are used including the national stadium and 2,000 players compete in 300 matches. It is the largest tournament in the world which garners prestige, publicity and television coverage.
The team is still short of funds to attend, but hopes to make up the shortfall when they host a golf day at Umdoni Golf Club on Sunday, 1 March and a live broadcast of the Kyknet rugby programme Toks ‘n Tjops at the school on 8 May.The evening will include dinner and a cash bar. Tickets are available from Francois Herbst on 082-300-1852.
