Join in Durban’s world stargazing record attempt

Become one of the largest crowds ever gathered on Earth to look at the stars together.

The Durban Branch of the Astronomical Society of South Africa invites the Amanzimtoti public to a mass stargazing world record attempt that takes place on Friday, 18 August at Durban Botanical Gardens at 6pm.

“We will attempt to break the world record by having over 2,000 people stargazing at one time,” said Astronomical Society of South Africa media and PR director, Logan Govender.

To be included in the count, you must use magnifying optics: A pair of binoculars – even toy binoculars – or any other optical viewing instrument such as birding scopes, spotting scopes, telephoto lenses or telescopes.

“Come and join in. It offers fun and excitement for the whole family. Take along binos or telescopes, a blanket and picnic supper, and become one of the largest crowds ever gathered on Earth to look at the stars together.”

There will be a small fee of not more than R20 to enter the gardens but the event is free.
