Local councillor’s reflecting on their positions

Local councillor’s reflecting on their positions.

THE COURIER decided to ask local councillors about what they love and hate in their wards and their duties as councillors.

This is what they had to say:

FAEEZA CHAME: “I love being a ward councillor for the simple reason to understand and represent local views and priorities. Also building strong relationships and encourage local people to communicate and engage in activities. What I hate about my job is that the importance of ward councillors is constantly overlooked. We are blamed for the poor delivery of services and praised for innovative initiatives.”
MONGAMELI MNYAMENI: “Being a councillor is like a calling to me because I like working with people. Attending to the issues that our people are facing like service delivery and being able to help out that makes me happy. One of the things I hate is that people burn things when they don’t get what they want and that affects innocent people.”
OUPA NGWANYA: “The frustrating part is when residents complain about a matter they want fixed sooner rather than later. After that, they would want to see the councillor removed from his position. The good part is as a person I gain more experience in conflict management skills.”
PETER STEWART: “I love working with people and achieve successes for which they are grateful and appreciative. To assist my community with the challenges they face and ensure a positive outcome. It is sad that there is always the political division – certain people always think you do it for political gain or have ulterior motives.”
