Garden makes resident feel good about himself

HIS love for gardening and the need to take care of his family have resulted in a beautiful vegetable garden which he simply cherishes.
Bafana Mohau (30) from Jackson informal settlement established his garden three years ago with the purpose of putting food on the table for his family.
He supports his son and wife with his garden and he also sells some of the vegetables he planted. From the money made through his sales, he buys seeds to keep the garden going.
He told the COURIER he started planting at an early age and it taught him to be a self-made man.

“My garden is my live or die. I make it a point to water the garden regularly. Every morning, the first thing I do is to clean the garden because dogs sometimes mess it up. But I try by all means to keep it clean and attractive. Before I go to sleep I water it with a bucket full of water,” said Mohau.
Mohau’s garden consists of spinach, cabbage and carrots to name a few. He wishes to get a site where he will be able to sow different kinds of vegetables and fruits.
“I do this alone, no one helps me. When I’m away from home I get frustrated because no one is able to take care of my garden,” he said.

One of his tenants Shepard Dube said it’s not every day that you see someone trying all means to provide for his family.
“I believe Bafana will one day get a site where he will sow vegetables and fruits. He inspires and motivates and he has pushed me to do well in my life as well,” he said.
