Glenvista fights back against violent crime
Community takes charge of their suburban area and fends off criminals.
JOHANNESBURG SOUTH: Glenvista patrollers have been on high alert; walking the streets at all hours of the morning and night as part of their mission to keep their area as safe as possible from the terror of criminals.
Although there have been a number of reports to the Mondeor SAPS of break-ins, armed robberies and deadly hijackings, the Glenvista community has pulled together to fight the scourge of crime in the south.
On November 13, two violent incidents were confirmed by Mondeor SAP to have taken place, one incident in Mulbarton on Cunningham Road and another on Dibberic Drive in Bassonia.
Reportedly, at least five suspects robbed a house on Cunningham Road, where they are said to have locked the occupants of the home in the bathroom thereafter helping themselves to an undisclosed list of household items. No arrests have been made but there is an ongoing investigation in processes.
“We confirm that a case has been reported and is being investigated by Mondeor SAPS. Please note that the registration of the vehicle used is false and should not be circulated as yet due to investigation,” informed Mondeor SAP officer, SGT Andrews.
An armed robbery incident is reported to have occurred on Dibberic Drive in Bassonia, where a blue 3 series BMW with dark tinted windows was said to be involved, the vehicle’s registration number could not be published, however, residents are urged to be on the lookout.
The Community Policing Forum and Mondeor Police Station gave the following tips for residents on how to stay safe this festive season.
“Residents please let’s all up our security; the police and security can only protect us as much as we protect ourselves. Make sure you have a remote panic button that you can carry with you around the house. Please ensure you have an alarm and that you connected to a security company. Please ensure you sleep with the alarm activated at night. If you are able to have small dogs, do so, it’s always a good idea. Do not sleep with your windows open; rather try to use a fan or aircon. Please test your alarm monthly. Make sure your cellphone, keys and handbags are always taken with you to your room at night. Be safe and take care…”
