Truck ploughs through residential trees
A wandering bee has been blamed as the troublemaker in the accident that resulted in a truck driver crashing through two trees on Hythe Avenue in Mulbarton on November 20.
MULBARTON – According to the driver of the truck who was with his colleague in the vehicle, a bee made its way into the truck, threatening to sting the driver on his buttocks when a hand swiping fight ensued.
“I was driving when I suddenly felt something trying to get into my T-shirt and that is when I saw the bee. I tried to swipe it away but it managed to sting me. That is when I lost control of the truck,” said the driver, who looked like he was in pain.
Both the driver and the passenger of the truck escaped without sustaining serious injuries but the vehicle was badly damaged as it managed to remove two big trees from their stalks, leaving only tiny stumps as reminders that there once were trees there.
Reportedly, tow truck drivers were first on the scene of the accident and they alerted ER24 and the Turffontein Fire Station officers who responded swiftly to an alert from switchboard. It is said that the Kibler Park Fire Station officers may have been unavailable for response even though Mulbarton forms part of their jurisdiction.
No property was damaged in the accident and residents seemed pleased that no one was hurt, although, there was great concern that the trucks airbags did not come up for the vehicle’s occupants’ protection, even on impact.
