Trees cut, ready for sale

Illegal cutting of trees has been on the increase in the South.

MEREDALE – Ward 125, committee member said there were tree choppers in the veld near Byvanger Street, Meredale on Wednesday November 20.

She said she saw two men cutting the already chopped trees in the veld. “I went to them to find out why they were chopping the trees. They told me they were sent by a man called Shezi who lives in Majazana next to Walkerville.”

She then contacted the Mondeor Police. Mosime said upon arrival of the police, one man ran away and the police only caught one who was left with the saws.

Sergeant Andrews from Mondeor Police confirmed the incident. “A man was detained at the police station, however, the person who alerted the police didn’t open the case and we didn’t have any statement from her. The man was then warned not to go there again,” explained Sgt Andrews.

Also in the area recently, there were people who were arrested for chopping trees and selling them for firewood.

Any person or entity that wants to deal in cutting trees for firewood have to obtain a permit from either the Provincial or Local authorities and that of the owners of the properties.
