Charged for selling tortoises illegally

A man has had charges laid against him after he tried to sell two tortoises on Sunday August 10.

MONDEOR –  According to a Mondeor resident, the man was trying to sell the tortoises at the Kliprivier Drive and Columbine Avenue intersections for R600 each.

“One of the tortoises was in the palm of his hand and the other in a plastic packet hanging from his wrist.

“For how long and how many days had these two unfortunate creatures been without water and the correct food? It’s illegal to keep tortoises, never mind sell them, without a permit,” she said.

Sector Two CPF patrollers were informed and they took him to Mondeor Police station, where they were met by Johannesburg SPCA inspectors. .

A member of the Nature Conservation has laid a charge against the man for selling the tortoises illegally, without a permit.
