No water for for seven days
We have been reporting this burst pipe for a very long time but we did not receive help - she said
JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – After what Lorraine du Preez and her neighbours call “three years of a leaking burst pipe” Lorraine could not take it anymore, after the situation worsened from slow flowing water to drought.
Lorraine from Jacobs Street, Turffontein West, lived for a long time in a building where water was flowing very slowly from the tap, because of a nearby burst pipe.
Her family and other residents from the building where she lives have adapted to the situation. They could get water, but they did not know when the water would stop when it would be back again.
But on Wednesday August 6, water stopped completely. She thought it would come back, not knowing this time she would have to go seven days withou water from her tap.
Speaking on Tuesday August 12, a few hours after the leak was closed, Lorraine said: “From last week Wednesday we did not have water and it did not come back. To fetch water we had to carry buckets from our apartment, down to a very slow tap outside the building, and then carry it back up the stairs just so that we could cook and use it for other things.” she said.
“I had to always scream at the children not to use the toilet as there was no water. That was when I could not take it anymore. I came to have a look at the burst pipe and then I called the COURIER. I am very happy we now have water coming from our taps.”
Ward 124 ANC Cllr Sidney Radebe acted swiftly to ascertain that the pipe was closed so that people could have water in their apartments.
Cllr Radebe, who was informed of the situation the same day Lorraine informed the COURIER, said: “I am glad Lorraine’s problem was resolved. I would like to encourage people to always report things like these as soon as possible, before they become an even bigger problem.”
The COURIER reported the situation to Cllr Radebe as Lorraine did not know who was the councillor of ward 124. This shows that knowing who the councillor of your ward is, helps. Cllr Radebe made sure the situation was resolved within 24 hours.
