It’s time to claim back the community

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) in the Booysens area wants its community to live in a drug-free society.
They are part of a local government structure which deals with Family Support Groups, Addiction Support Groups, ToughLove Programme, Recovery Coaching Programme, Rehab Referrals, Youth Development Programmes, Skills Development Programmes and Detoxification.
Wayne Fearick, who is a member of the committee of LDAC, said it is a legislative body which reports directly to the local government.
“We have 32 townships where LDAC has been established and functional on drugs awareness. LDAC works in three pillars; harm reduction, demand reduction and supply reduction, where the first reduction deals with going to school and to those who are not using drugs; the second one gives help to families (Addiction Support Groups, ToughLove Programme, Recovery Coaching Programme and Rehab Referrals) and the last one aims to identify the dealers. We want to incorporate them back to the community with the help from SAPS, CPF and Neighbourhood Watch,” explained Wayne.
Though LDAC wants to create a safe community, they also want to do restoration justice for the drug dealers through door to door campaigns. “Drug dealers need to know that they either leave our areas, or stay if they want to co-orporate. Our community will be better without them. This will be a collective effort, and we need all the support we can get from people in the area. Ward 55 Cllr Rashieda Landis supports LDAC,” he said.
Wayne mentioned that there are 12 committee members chaired by Anastacia Jacobs and they have more than 200 stakeholders. They have recently located a place where they will work from, but this place at 122 Harry Street, Robertsham doesn’t have water or electricity.
On Sunday September 28 at Crown Gardens Recreation Centre from 14:00 they will be conducting the stakeholders meeting and NGOs, NPOs, FBOs, businesses and community members are invited. Wayne can be contacted on 084 316 4723.
