DA’s vision for Ward 124

Ward 124 is currently an ANC ward led by Cllr Sidney Radebe.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Councillor Tyrell Meyers and the DA branch in Ward 124 wants to see a better ward in 2015, and has identified focus areas that the DA intend to tackle in the coming months.

“The poor state of council-owned old age homes, such as Reuven and Glenesk, as well as the issues of allocation at the Selby Hostels, are just some of the housing matters that we will look into.

“Senior citizens are not treated with dignity when their units are not maintained by the city.

“House ‘hijackings’ are also becoming a serious problem in the ward, which is contributing to urban crime and grime. We will soon provide a way forward on this particular issue,| said Tyrell Meyers.

Crime and substance abuse were raised as major concerns for residents in Ward 124. The DA awaits feedback on the petition submitted to have the service lanes closed off, to help reduce crime.

The DA also believes projects and activities are needed to help keep the youth active after school, to reduce loitering and give them stimulation as this can reduce drugs and substance abuse and in the bigger picture reduce crime overall.

“General service delivery relating to dumping, roads, parks needs to be tackled also. We will expose the failings of the departments and the officials who fail to deliver to residents. We will take it to the mayor and chief whip if we need to.

“The ward has a high unemployment rate due to the high number of people moving within the ward. We need to bring investment back into the ward to result in jobs that are labour intensive. We also want the youth to visit the innovation hub in Marshall Street, which helps young entrepreneurs get established. This includes NGOs, and cooperatives,” Mayers added.

Ward 124 DA aims to start a programme in the ward soon to help reach out to these young leaders.
