Child road safety is a necessity

#SaveKidsLives: The petition is signed and ready for decision makers to take it seriously and comply with the safety measures demanded

GLENANDA – Glenanda Primary School has joined the global initiative #SaveKidsLives, following a terrible accident which left a little boy badly injured.

A declaration on child road safety has been signed and handed over to a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Ambassador and major supporters of the cause, including the Thaba Eco Hotel and Pam Golding Joburg South.

UNEP ambassador and Miss Earth founder Ella Bella Constantinides said: “I’m here to receive the signed declaration and to hand it over to the UN. The aim is to get a traffic light and to also create awareness on child road safety by sending a letter to Clr Paul Smit.”

A Glenanda Primary pupil was recently knocked over by a vehicle in full view of horrified parents and learners.

According to a parent, the vehicle must have struck the little boy so hard that his shoes came off during the incident.

Pam Golding’s Cobie van Es drove past the scene and says she still becomes emotional when talking about the accident.

“I drove past after it happened, my little girls saw this and we immediately prayed that the boy would be fine,” she says. ”My main reason for being here is to support the school and community and to have this problem dealt with.”

The dangerous circumstances on Vorster Avenue and Glen Avenue have resulted in learners having to duck and dive from speeding vehicles when they attempting to cross the roads.

Road conditions have reached such a dire state that Glenanda Primary School said it has become too dangerous to have a scholar patrol controlling traffic.

Residents and businesses are urged to support schools and the community by sponsoring traffic control measures at south schools and contributing to the #SaveKidsLives effort.
