A CYCLE challenge will take place on Sunday, July 26, to raise funds for 14-year-old Brendon Macdonald, who suffers from progressive scoliosis, or severe curvature of the spine.
The life of this vibrant Hoërskool Marais Viljoen learner has been impacted greatly by his condition and his family is doing all they can to help Brendon get the operation he desperately needs.
The funds raised by the cycle challenge will go towards covering Brendon’s operation on July 28. They family hopes to raise R60 000 with this challenge, which will go towards the R230 000 needed for the operation. Due to complications, the family’s medical aid is unable to cover the operation.
Brendon’s orthopedic surgeon, Dr Koos Louw, has recommended that the operation be done as soon as possible to give Brendon a chance of full recovery and to live a normal life. Since discovering the full extent of the damage to Brendon’s spine, in January, the scoliosis has progressed even more rapidly and the bend of Brendon’s spine has increased from 49 to 55 degrees.
Cyclists can choose between a 12km or 32km route. The race starts at 10:00 at the Circus Coffe Shop on the R59 and free hamburgers and refreshments will be supplied. The entry fee for children is R100 and R250 for adults. The cycle challenge will start at 10:00 and all race finishers will receive a medal.
The family is also planning a golf day in the near future to raise additional funds.
