JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Two suspects, whose luck ran out when they were arrested by Mondeor SAPS officers for the possession of a stolen VW Polo at the Kibler Park recreation centre, have had their day in court and face serious charges.
Previously the two suspects were linked with what was first believed to be a cash-in-transit heist on July 23. Further investigation confirmed the incident to be a hijacking during which two suspects were fatally wounded and two officers of the law killed.
After hijacking the vehicles, the suspects drove straight to Kibler Park, where they offloaded their loot into getaway vehicles and headed in the direction of The Hill.
According to national SAPS spokesperson Lieut Col Katlego Mogale, “The courier truck was taken together with its escort vehicle, to Kibler Park, where the suspects exchanged vehicles. They took the shipment of cellphones into a white BMW and a black Nissan Navara. The suspects were picked up in Rosettenville, where they were confronted by security guards and a shootout ensued. Johannesburg Flying Squad members, who were on patrol, heard the shots and responded.”
Three other suspects involved in the hijacking of the courier truck and its escorting white VW Polo, near Selby, were arrested and firearms confiscated. Both vehicles were recovered and impounded by the police.
The two suspects appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on August 19.
The CHRONICLE is still awaiting information from SAPS about the other three suspects arrested in connection with the hijacking.
