2 arrested as JMPD recovers suspected stolen copper worth R16m
Two men are in custody after JMPD officers recovered suspected stolen copper sheets worth an estimated R16 million during a targeted operation in Booysens.
Two men have been arrested after JMPD Tactical Response Unit officers recovered suspected stolen copper sheets worth R16m during an intelligence-driven operation in Booysens on Thursday, August 6.
The operation followed information received by JMPD officers about the theft of copper sheets linked to an SAPS case registered in Maydon Wharf, Durban.
The intelligence led officers to a warehouse at the corner of Treu and Vlak streets in Booysens, where a truck transporting the stolen cargo was believed to be located.
Officers searched the warehouse and discovered suspected stolen copper sheets loaded inside two trucks parked in the yard. The recovered copper sheets are estimated to be worth approximately R16 million.
Two Chinese nationals found at the premises were arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.
They were taken into custody and detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS, where further investigations are continuing.
The JMPD praised the successful intelligence-led operation and the cooperation that led to the recovery of the suspected stolen copper sheets.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to combating crimes involving critical infrastructure and said it will continue working closely with other law enforcement agencies and communities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
