PIKITUP has put in place a recovery plan to clean the Inner-City and resume normal services. This plan will commenced on Sunday November 29 and will clear the backlog that accumulated over the past week.

Pikitup services 1 625 square kilometers across the City of Johannesburg. “We collect and dispose of 6 000 tons of waste daily to our four distressed landfill sites. We clean and sweep approximately 9 000 kilometers of streets. The five day interruption of services has resulted in 30 thousand tons of waste piling up. This is a serious health hazard,” Amanda Nair from Pikitup

Refuse Collection Recovery Plan

The company is implementing a recovery plan to provide operational continuity and quick recovery for all critical areas, as follows:

1. Cleaning of the inner city
A massive clean-up of the inner city started on Sunday November 29 at 14:30. The clean-up covered the Inner City, Joubert Park, Hillbrow, Braamfontein, Hillbrow, Fordsburg and Yeoville. Water trucks have been sourced from the City’s Emergency Management Services to wash the streets once cleaning has been completed.

2. Garden Sites
Over the strike period, garden sites operated by Pikitup have seen huge amounts of waste accumulating. Decanting of waste from the garden sites has commenced and priority will be given to the garden sites in Bally Clare, Panorama, Norwood, Southdale and Waterval. Residents who are able to, are encouraged to deposit their waste at their nearest garden refuse site.

3. Informal settlements
To deal with the backlog in informal settlement additional refuse bags will be issued to residents. Residents are likewise encouraged to place their refuse at central locations within their areas for ease of collection. A process to confirm these central locations with the collaboration of ward councilors is in hand.
4. Refuse Collection Rounds
As from Monday, 30 November 2015, normal refuse collection rounds will resume in accordance with the normal collections schedule. Additional vehicles, plant, equipment and manpower have been made available to augment capacity at each depot. Residents are urged to take out their bins in accordance with their normal refuse collection schedule. All excess refuse in bags can be placed next to the 240 litre waste bin on the scheduled day of collection.
