TBC celebrates centenary

AFTER 100 years, the Turffontein Bowls Club (TBC) is still going strong and its current president, Derek Udemans, believes the club will continue to attract new members.
On Saturday, November 28, they held their centenary celebrations and the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Clr Parks Tau, visited the club to wish them well with their festivities.
“Here we are a family and like all families we had our highs and lows however success followed us. Since the club was officially opened by its first president Mr W. O’Hara on December 16, 1915, it has grown in leaps and bounds. We are honoured to be with the current mayor of Johannesburg,” said Derek who is in seventh year as the club’s president.
Clr Tau congratulated the club as he was presented with the thank you award.
Also present was Trevor Davis, the executive of Bowls SA. “Recognition must go to those who deserve it. We have challenges, and one of them is transformation. I don’t mean black and white, I mean change from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. The change I’m talking about is bringing more youngsters into the game. For some reason we have excluded the youth. In the Western Cape bowls has been included in school sports. So let us take bowls forward for the good,” he said.
One of the oldest members in the club, Sam Adams (86), said TBC is the best club in the South. “I started playing at Herbert Bowling Club. My best friend, Hennie Botha, whom I’ve known for more than 35 years, is the secretary of TBC. No other club can beat TBC,” he said.
To put a cherry on top, one of their members, Ernest Voster celebrated his 51st birthday on the day. Bianca and Belinda Passmore from B-Creative in Robertsham also surprised the club with a cake, wishing them 100 more happy years.
