Walkerville sunrise service a success

ABOUT 350 people braved the cold and the dark to attend an Easter Sunrise Service in Walkerville hosted by Calvary Christian Church on Monday morning, March 28.

The highlight of the morning was an inspirational talk by international quadriplegic athlete Pieter du Preez. Pieter is the only quadriplegic in the world to complete a Western Australia SunSmart Ironman competition. He completed the full 226km in 13 hours and 24 minutes on December 8, 2014 in Busselton, West Australia. That’s almost four hours below the strict cut-off time.

Pieter, who also took part in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, was 23 years old when he was paralysed in a freak accident. Since then he’s been a C6 quadriplegic, which means he can only move his head, shoulders and arms.

In all his endeavours, his wife Ilse is always by his side. Pieter is an outspoken Christian. He draws inspiration and courage from his faith.

The church would like to thank the following generous sponsors: Johnny Viera from Johnny Walkers Pub & Grill, Walkerville; Bruno Barradas from Pick n Pay Panorama; Dominique de Gouveia from Joy! Magazine as well as the numerous members of the Walkerville community who gave generously of their time and resources.
