Former MEC and family in dire need after fire
The former MEC is in need of help to restore his home and will take anything people can offer, from clothes to furniture and so forth.
HAVING lost over 30 years of property that was accumulated over the years, bought and paid for bit by bit, to a fire, the family of a former MEC are in dire straits and will accept any help people can offer.
The Kibler Park family of former MEC for public transport Khabisi Mosunkutu have found that people often assume all will be well because it’s the home of a former official. But that isn’t the case at all.
The property was home to an extended family of 13 but the fire mostly affected the MEC, his wife Pastor Nonqaba Mosunkutu and their 24-year-old son, as they lost all their clothes and belongings in the fire. The blaze broke out on the morning of Wednesday, July 20, around 07:30.
“The clothes that we are wearing were given to us by a few people who knew we needed help. We have just been balancing and trying to buy clothes just to keep ourselves dressed. There was a time when I could not go to work and church because I did not even know what I would wear. We lost everything we had accumulated over 30 years in less than an hour. I remember I left home for work around 05:45 and as soon as I got there I was phoned and informed that our home was on fire. In that short period all the things we bought and paid for on instalment all those years were gone,” said Nonqaba.
The family said their biggest loss was in the laundry room because it is where their uniforms, clothes and essentials were placed. Not a single item remains. What’s left of the kitchen is covered in soot with only burnt plates to salvage.
“The neighbours tried to put out the fire by relying on the swimming pool water and the family deeply appreciate that. Five rooms and the passage are completely ruined. We slept in the lapa for a couple of nights. I think most people know that we lost a home but do not know the extent of the damage. We want to thank all the neighbours and everyone who did what they could to help us,” said Mosunkutu.
The family will take whatever donations people can offer, from furniture to clothes and cutlery and so forth. Labour to help revamp and clean the home would be greatly welcomed and appreciated. Anyone or any organisation wishing to help can contact Nonqaba Mosunkutu on 079 373 6111 or mosunkutu.nm207@gmail.com.
