Scholar patrollers honoured

MORE than 2 500 learners representing 180 schools in Joburg received road safety certificates and medals at a recognition ceremony held by the JMPD Community Outreach Unit at Wembley Stadium, Turffontein on Thursday, September 8.

Scholar patrollers are in control of the learners’ safety when crossing the street to enter and exit the school and Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar applauded the hard work done by scholar patrollers. “Since the enforcement of scholar patrollers in schools two years ago, we haven’t had any accident next to these schools. Their passion and dedication will be rewarded in this ceremony,” he said.

Besides JMPD other departmental stakeholders involved were Joburg Water (JW), Department of Transport (DoT), Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) and Department of Community Safety (DCS) as well as external stakeholders 3M Technologies and Syntell.

New MMC for Public Safety, Clr Michael Sun, said learners will be awarded this ceremony as a token of appreciation for the excellent and outstanding work they have done since the beginning of the year by assisting learners, teachers and community members to cross the road safely in the mornings and afternoons.

The Community Outreach Unit works with primary schools and early childhood development centres to educate and create awareness about road safety. The training is conducted by JMPD and takes one hour and 30 minutes followed by extensive monitoring, which takes place in the morning and afternoon. The unit works within the times allocated by GDE. Learners aged eight to 12 years are targeted for training. Visible clothing and equipment are provided by DCS and Syntell.

The training is free and takes place at the schools (theory inside the school premises and practicals on-site at the pedestrian crossing).
