A tour of the Hamlet Foundation
The organisation caters for intellectually challenged children and adults and keeps them busy and active.
The Hamlet Foundation continues to show locals that the centre is still dedicated to keeping intellectually challenged children and adults busy, active and skilled.
The foundation was founded in 1954 and has now developed so much that it has a school for at least 250 intellectually challenged children and a residential centre that houses 60 residents while another 150 of the adults and children it caters for come and go every day.
The centre is a friendly and positive environment. Some of the work that is done there is impressive. Products are distributed to a lot of retail stores. A lot of Clicks products are assembled and packaged at the foundation’s workshop in North Road, Rewlatch.
According to Priska Nkomaza, who has been a part of the organisation for approximately 10 years, the foundation aims to develop and empower the individual towards achieving their maximum potential, enabling them to lead as normal a life as possible.
“We have been able to do this for so many years because we get corporate and individual support and without that we would not have achieved all of this. It is tough every day but we always hope that someone gives something useful even when it is not money, because some of these things can help the centre.
“We sell Casual Day stickers to raise funds and we also run monthly competitions where people sign up for small amounts like R20 to be debited from their accounts and then we select three random winners. These competitions help us raise funds to keep the foundation going. There are many other things we do to raise funds and people are welcome to contact use and partake.”
The Hamlet Foundation still needs to replace its old towels, comforters, linen, cutlery, cereal bowls, bins, vacuum cleaners, mops and buckets, among many other items. The centre also has a wish list for quality electronics they wish to buy (quotations have been done) and would appreciate financial support from any person or organisation wishing to lend a helping hand.
People interested in helping the foundation and viewing its wish list are encouraged to dial 011 613 8121 or send an email to admin@hamlet.org.za or visit the centre at 158 North Road, Rewlatch, Johannesburg.
