THE annual Diwali festival will be held at Gold Reef City Theme Park on Saturday, October 15, from 09:00 to midnight. The fireworks display will be approximately 15 minutes long commencing at 21:00.
All Joint Operations Committee (JOC ) permissions have been obtained, including exemptions and permissions for the fireworks display.
The celebration of Diwali in South Africa is a diverse kaleidoscope of the Hindu festival of lights which is celebrated from October 29 to 31.
Diwali fireworks display
Fireworks can only be set off between 19:00 and 22:00 on the days of Diwali. Anyone who does not abide by the by-law faces a R500 fine. Please be mindful of children and pets.
The following must be taken into consideration:
1. No one under the age of 16 is allowed to handle or use fireworks, except when they are under the supervision of an adult.
2. You cannot use fireworks within 500m of any explosives factory, explosives storage place, petrol depot, petrol station, inside any building and at any public place, including schools, old age homes and hospitals.
Residents are urged to mind the following:
1. Pick a site appropriate for lighting crackers.
2. Keep animals indoors, with the curtains closed and the TV or radio switched on to distract them.
3. Check the wind direction before starting the display.
4. Keep the fireworks out of children’s reach.
5. Pick up all the remains of the fireworks after the display.
Permission is not needed for days of cultural and religious celebrations, including Diwali, Chinese New Year, Human Rights Day, Guy Fawkes Day, Christmas Eve and the Day of Goodwill but the fireworks can only be set off from 19:00 to 22:00.
