Transformer explosion kills man

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, said their paramedics arrived on the scene and immediately found two patients.

VARIOUS suburbs were left in the dark after a transformer exploded, killed a man and injured a woman in the parking lot of the Southgate Mall, on Wednesday, October 26.

The man was critically injured and succumbed to his injuries in hospital. He was airlifted by ER24 paramedics who rushed to the scene to assist the two employees of the City of Johannesburg. Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, said their paramedics arrived on the scene and immediately found two patients. “A man and a woman were working inside the transformer when it exploded. On assessment, paramedics discovered that one of the patients, a man, had sustained burn wounds over most of his body, leaving him in a critical condition while a second patient, a woman, was found with moderate burns to her body.

“Paramedics immediately began to treat the patients and provided them with numerous advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the critically injured patient was airlifted by a private medical helicopter while the woman was transported by ambulance. Both patients were transported to a private hospital in Johannesburg,” he said.

Nozipho Kumalo, from the marketing department at Southgate Mall, confirmed that the man died. “City of Johannesburg phoned to inform us about his passing. Condolences to his family. The cause of the explosion is still unclear and investigations and repairs are under way,” she said.
