School still doesn’t have proper toilets
Earlier this year the COURIER reported that the school was temporary closed because it did not have proper sanitation.
ORMONDE Primary School still has temporary toilets because it is situated on two sites, zoned educational and residential.
This makes it difficult for municipality to account for service, especially water. One of the residents, Dawie Louw said the school which consist of non-permanent structures, started nearly two years ago. “The school opened its doors a year later, at the beginning of this year. It was widely reported at the time that the school had no sewer connection and that temporary, portable toilets had to be used. Well, it seems that nearly a year later, this is still the case. Who is responsible for this waste of taxpayers’ money?” said Dawie.
Gauteng Department of Education’s acting spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe said the school is located on two sites, zoned educational and residential.
“At the time when the school was under construction, the department sent an application to municipality to consolidate these two sites into one. This is important because at the moment, municipality cannot issue account for services. Once consolidation is completed, a school account and title deed will be issued and therefore a permanent connection will be effected. We are still waiting for the municipality to conclude all these processes,” noted Bodibe.
Earlier this year the COURIER reported that the school was temporarily closed because it did not have proper sanitation. The SGB chairman Teddy Nair then said the challenge was a result of the school being built on two separate properties. Nair called this decision “working backwards” as he believed things would have been much better had the Department of Education combined the properties prior to the commencement of construction.
The school did receive 20 mobile toilets which the SGB did not approve of as the toilet seats were big and they were worried that small learners could fall into them. Another safety concern was that the toilets did not lock from the inside.
