MOFFATVIEW SAPS is proud to have arrested two community leaders for alleged fraud. The duo allegedly received R189 000 for a bogus house sale.
In July of 2014, the two suspects allegedly met with a man who wanted to buy a house in La Rochelle. He handed them a R10 000 deposit for a house in 3rd Street, La Rochelle, in August 2014.
According to the police, the willing buyer was then taken to the house and noticed that it was still occupied. He was told there must have been a “systematic communications failure”.
Later he was asked to deposit R150 000 electronically into the two suspects’ account. Shortly thereafter they visited the willing buyer to assure him that everything was going to plan and that he must make another payment for R22 000. After paying he asked about a receipt and was told there was no receipt book.
“The complainant was promised that he will move into the house in December 2014. He then left for KwaZulu-Natal and returned in January 4, 2015, only to find that no paperwork had been done and the house was still occupied. He asked who was responsible for paperwork. He was taken to another lady and an amount of R7 000 was demanded to evict the people from the house.
“Months went by without hearing any news from the two agents. The complainant approached the two agents and they promised to pay back the money, but he has still not received his money. The two suspects were arrested in March 2017.
“These are community leaders who were busy saying the police are corrupt whereas they are the ones defrauding community members.
“Well done to Detective Constable Billy Letsoalo and Constable Cedric Mohokare for following up on the case,” said a proud communications officer, Constable Rebecca Bila.
