Community sport and development tourney
The focus this year is “Sports against Alcohol and Drug Abuse”.
AFRICAN Diaspora Hope (Adhope), in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, is organising the Simunye Cup 2018 for Africa Unity. They are calling on 54 African amateur soccer teams residing in South Africa to represent their nation in a friendly soccer tournament.
The plan is to open it during Human Rights Month on March 17, run it until Freedom Day (April 27) and finalise it on May 26 during Africa Month. The focus this year is “Sports against alcohol and drug abuse”. The matches will only be played on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and on public holidays. The purpose of this year’s tournament is to strengthen solidarity among Africans and to create an awareness platform that promotes social cohesion in South Africa. Many South African authorities and community leaders, as well as the media, will be part of the event that will be filled with real African entertainment and fun.
Prizes – 1st place R15 000, 2nd place R7 000 and 3rd place R3 000. Other categories like best player, top goal scorer, best goalkeeper, best fun club and the best team will be awarded trophies and medals.
Organiser Seraphin Kengne said they are therefore calling on any South African-based community soccer teams or players willing to represent their country, to come forward and register for this great opportunity. Registration starts from February 1 to 28.
