Unsolved burning issue

Residents demand to be included in the development plans.

TENSIONS keep mounting as residents continue to claim their issues remain unaddressed in South Hills.

Chaos broke out outside the South Hills housing project in the south of Johannesburg on the morning of February 12.

Locals took to the streets barricading entry into the complex. The residents were protesting to have their demands met.

Their demands, according to the ANC councillor of Ward 124, Mongameli Mnyameni, were to be prioritised in the rolling out of properties in the newly developed South Hills housing project.

A handful of South Hills residents told the COURIER on February 22 that their issues were still unaddressed.

They collectively stated that no agreement had been reached following the two-day picket outside the housing project on February 12 and 13.

COMRADE: Community leader Simphiwe Hlafa addresses the protesters.

They told the COURIER that they were asked to save their energies as the councillors would engage with stakeholders to find a way forward.

Mnyameni is still adamant that it is important for locals to reap the benefits of this development first, as they are the ones who have supported it from the start.

A large number of residents rallied outside the housing project on February 12, demanding to be included in its development, which could become a repeated issue if consensus is not reached.

A steering committee has still not been formed to ensure the views and demands of the community match the targets and plans of the development.

The COURIER has been informed that meetings between councillors have happened and will report on the findings once they have been confirmed.
