Save water with these tips
The team told the residents about ways on how best they can use water and water saving tips.
THE JOHANNESBURG Water (JW) team held their water conservation tips meeting with the residents of South Hills at the South Rand Recreation Centre on March 24.
Out of 33 wards in Johannesburg, South Hills, which falls under Ward 57, is one of the wards that use water excessively. The team told the residents about ways on how best they can use water and water saving tips.

They were led by JW’s Molly Netshimbolimbo from the stakeholder relation department. She said they were there to make the people of South Hills aware because according to their study, they use more water.
Also present was Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame who reiterated that water as a precious commodity needs to be preserved and saved. “We need to save water. If you have a leaking tap, please go and buy a rubber to stop the leakage. Also, report any leakage in the ward,” she said.
Aifheli Netshivhumbe from Southdale Depot said when it comes to maintenance they have challenges, especially theft and vandalism. “There are people who vandalise our infrastructure and steal JW property. Fire hydrants and water meters are some of the infrastructures that people steal and vandalise.
“Also, the residents need to check for any leakages in their house because this can lead to huge amounts on their bill. Check the statement and compare the amount of water you use and money you pay. Remember to always log a call whenever there is a problem,” he said.

Why must you use water efficiently?
• It reduces your water bill.
• It reduces the cost of dams, water purification and maintenance costs which will result in lower tariffs.
• It makes water available for the increasing population so that JW and the government can supply water to others who might not have a reliable water supply.
• Ensuring a continuous uninterrupted supply of water in the future.
How to conserve water without necessarily changing your lifestyle
Indoors
• Convert to a dual flush toilet.
• Adjust the water level of washing and dishwashing machines to suit the load.
• Install water-saving shower heads and flow restrictors.
• Take short showers or, if you want to soak for a while, take a bath.
• Repair leaking/dripping taps.
• Turn the tap off when you are brushing your teeth.
Outdoors
• Water your garden in the morning or late in the afternoon and avoid watering on windy days.
• Keep your garden free of weeds as they use water too.
• When sprinkling, use a timer on the tap.
• Install a drip system or micro-sprays in garden beds.
• Soak your gardens twice a week and water the roots, not the leaves.
• Use a trigger nozzle on your hose.
• Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk.
• Wash your car on the lawn while using a bucket instead of the hose.
• Cover your pool to avoid evaporation on hot days and throughout the winter season.
• Plant indigenous plants that require less watering.
