The dilemma of living together in one room

Mothobi wants his privacy where he can live like a normal young man.

Tshepiso Mothobi (22) from Turffontein is tired of sharing the one-room living space with his mother.

He has been living with his mother for 17 years in the one room which serves as kitchen, lounge and bedroom. Being in a wheelchair, this limited space makes it difficult for him to roam around.

The room has one bed and Tshepiso has to share the bed with his mother which is not ideal for a man his age. What concerns Tshepiso most is having to bounce out when his mother is bathing.

Living like this is straining Tshepiso as he also wants his privacy as a young man. Tshepiso can’t even invite friends to his house. He applied for an RDP house in South Hills and has been banking on a response.

“Sanco promised me that they will give me a house in South Hills where development is currently underway, but since there hasn’t been any feedback I am in the dark. All I want is my own space or a house with multiple rooms where my mother and I can have privacy,’’ Mothobi told COURIER.

Ward 55 Sanco chairperson Mandla Xaba said “We don’t give away RDP houses or any stands. What we do for the community is we provide information on how one can apply for a subsidy. People should know that we are not authorised to give away houses. If one of our members has issued such a statement saying Sanco will give Mothanbi a RDP house, I can confirm it was false information.’’

HELP: Currently Mothobi and his mother are renting and that stresses them a lot as most of the money they have has to go towards paying rent.

The COURIER tried to make contact with the ward councillor to find out how anyone can assist Tshepico, but the councillor was not available.
