Forest Hill’s resident fed up with the shebeen next door

Shereen Phillips from Schuller Street, Forest Hill, claims that her neighbour Tanywu Germuine is invading her privacy and security by allowing her shebeen patrons to make noise and drink in front of her gate.

SHEREEN Phillips from Schuller Street, Forest Hill, claims that her neighbour Tanywu Germuine is invading her privacy and security by allowing her shebeen patrons to make noise and drink in front of her gate.

The neighbours’ relationship from the beginning was like a match made in heaven where they helped each other in time of tribulations. But, the relationship didn’t last that long, the relationship became sour when Germuine opened a shebeen and that left Phillips furious. She feels unsafe as the drinkers urinate on her front gate and sometimes camp on her outside lawn.

“The noise is unbearable and my bedroom window and the shebeen is just blockaded by a wall, so my husband and I have to vacate our room every night and sleep in the lounge. I have contacted various departments about this. Also, what I don’t trust is the legitimacy of her alcohol licence,” Shereen told the COURIER.

Germuine said “When I started selling liquor I had no licence but as time went by the police raided my shebeen and it was shut down. Then I applied for a licence and I finally got it two months ago. Shereen and I started on good foot. I run a tuck shop as well, I used to give her credit when she asked for something and I understood because she is my neighbour. Regarding the noise it’s only her that is complaining about that, the rest of the neighbourhood isn’t.”

The COURIER contacted Trevor Ndziba, the pollution control officer of Environmental Health, who said: “I am not allowed to give any statement to the media. But, I know what is going on in Schuller Street, Forest Hill.”

Both neighbours reported each other on numerous occasions to the Booysens SAPS.

DRINKING: People drink outside on the lawn of Shereen Phillips’s property. She told the COURIER when she chases them away they retaliate.

Lorraine Emmerik, communications officer of Booysens SAPS, said: “Booysens SAPS raided the shebeen on numerous occasions. At this moment in time, we have a case that is being investigated and has been handed to court for investigation purposes. We are now waiting on it with further instructions, we as the station have sent an enquiry to the Gauteng Liquor Board concerning the licence that Germuine currently has. Once we receive the information we will be able to go further on the matter.”
