Duo makes the most of wasted water

Two guys do their laundry at the veld every week

MLONDI Zungu (30) and Aviwe Ndandani (30) from Booysens do their laundry in the veld using water from a burst pipe.

They do so every week not because they don’t have water at their residence, they say, but because they love it. They also wash dishes and shoes using powder soap to keep the clothes smelling good. These men don’t care what people think of them, so long as their laundry and other chores get done.

Mlondi said good-humouredly: “We are not doing this because we are poor. We are just keeping ourselves busy. We grew up doing our laundry in the veld, but at that time there were no burst pipes. If people want to join us here they are more than welcome. It’s fun and exciting.”

Joburg Water, however, cautioned residents like Mlondi and Aviwe because they should report burst pipes to prevent water from being wasted.

Eleanor Mavimbela, external communication officer from Joburg Water said: “If there are any burst pipes, residents should log a call so that we can send a team to fix the pipes to stop water from being wasted. It is not the right thing to do to wash clothes where there is a pipe leaking.”

The COURIER reported the location to be repaired.
