WATCH: Kenilworth residents water crisis

They collect water with buckets and store it in a big container so that it can last them longer.

RESIDENTS from 25A and 27A Lindhorst Street in Kenilworth are forced to fetch water from a leak at the main supply close by.

The lack of taps and clean water proves to be a continuous struggle for Kenilworth residents and they tersely depend on the hole. The residents have used the water in the hole for about two years now and they use it for washing clothes, cooking, bathing and gardening purposes.

They collect water with buckets and store it in a big container so that it can last them longer.

Residents told the COURIER that they have been asking for the councillor’s help and they got no response from him. It is not only the taps that are troubling them but poor toilets as well.

Joyce Sibiya, one of the residents said: “We want water taps installed because we are struggling to get water. Every day we have to get water from the hole and that water is filthy.

“The current councillor came to us before he was elected and told us that our situation will change as soon as he becomes a councillor. But, since then, he hasn’t helped us with anything. We are still in the dark. We know that the councillor doesn’t build houses or give water but he was voted in to help local residents with their problems and try to resolve them.”

They also stated that the lack of water at the properties leave them no choice but to relieve themselves in a bucket since they don’t have flushing toilets.

Another resident, who did not want to be named, told the COURIER most of the people that are living in these two properties are elderly and that the water they get from the hole is affecting their health.

Cllr Mongemali Myameni said: “First of all, to tell the truth, those people don’t own those properties. There are rightful owners of those properties. So, if I am to help, that will mean they must be evicted because they are occupying the properties illegally.”

The councillor added: “I have never inspected that property during the election campaign. My colleagues and I went everywhere and we spoke to everyone and listened to everyone. That is a private property and it will be wrong of me to just enter someone else’s property and starts to do renovations.”
