ID horror for a poor woman from Jackson Drift informal settlement

Having no ID has caused problems for her children because they don’t have birth certificates or IDs either.

LUCY Kalane (40) from Jackson Drift informal settlement, has never had an identity document (ID) and is now pleading for help to get one.

She said that she has been applying for an ID for many years with no success. Having no ID has caused problems for her children because they don’t have birth certificates or IDs either.

She is a mother of four. One of her children is currently in matric and Lucy can’t even get her child to apply for an ID to write her final exams.

Lucy has no bank account, house or policies under her name. She told COURIER she visited Orlando Home Affairs in Soweto several times but she couldn’t get help.

“I can’t support my children as a mother. For every job I apply for I need an ID. How can I support my family without one. I don’t care about me, but all that I want is to get an ID so that I can help my children get birth certificates and IDs,” said Lucy.

All Lucy’s siblings have IDs except her. When she told the COURIER that her sisters and brothers have IDs except her, she wept in despair.

Orlando Home Affairs couldn’t be reached for a comment.

Alberton Home Affairs medium office manager, Elias Mokoena said, “The only way for her to get help is to ask one of her family members who has an ID to help her apply for late birth registration and also provide details of the school Lucy attend and we can take it from there.”
