Recyclers use trolleys as vehicles

It is not only these three recyclers who have this tendency, but almost all of the recyclers who are situated in Regents Park and South Hills also do this.

RECYCLERS use their trolleys as vehicles on one of the busiest roads, Southern Klipriviersberg Road, in Regents Park and South Hills.

COURIER spotted one of the recyclers on his trolley travelling at a high speed while cars were behind him and he changed lanes very quickly as if he was driving a car. Moments later another two recyclers stormed down the road without any fear of being hurt.

It is not only these three recyclers who have this tendency, but almost all of the recyclers who are situated in Regents Park and South Hills also do this.

One recycler, who wished not to be mentioned, said, “This is risk-taking but after months of practice you become used to it. We do this after getting money from recycling most of the time, this is some way of celebrating our pay. We are not scared of cars in the streets, some motorists swear at us but we keep doing what we do.”

People cheer them when they are riding their trolleys at high speed. When they get cheered they get motivated and they increase their speed. While speeding they change lanes from left to right with flair and style.

Another recycler said, “We often race with each other and that makes it more fun. People think we are crazy but we are enjoying it. I don’t recall anyone who died while doing this.”

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said, “ People pushing or riding trolleys don’t need a licence. As long as they don’t cause accidents they are not breaking any law.”
