Shops that sell counterfeit goods were raided and the goods were taken away.

JOINT operation between law enforcement agencies, City of Johannesburg, security companies and youth forum yielded positives in Rosettenville Junction and Diaz Mall on October 18.

Moffat View SAPS, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Environmental Health, Citizen Relation and Urban Management, Pikitup, National Security, Umkhambathi Youth Forum and Guardian Angel Security descended on the area to enforce the by-laws.

The day started with the executive mayor, Herman Mashaba, addressing the police on Operation Buya Mthetho at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.

Moffat View SAPS communications officer Capt Jeff Phora said, “As part of Operation Buya Mthetho, JMPD and Moffat View SAPS raided one of the shops in Rosettenville Junction where they discovered counterfeit goods. The operation was launched in February this year and is a multi-departmental operation between all key City departments and entities. It is aimed at enforcing by-laws and bringing the rule of law to the City of Johannesburg, and has recorded many successes.”

Ward 56 councillor Michael Crichton said this was a much-needed operation.

“The community has been experiencing drug dealing, theft and people squatting in the area. It’s time for us to clean up the area and we want the residents to live in a safe and peaceful environment. The informal settlements were demolished and the illegal vendors were removed. I would like to thank all the entities that participated in the raid. This is yet another step towards restoring the rule of law in Ward 56,” he said.
