EkasiNyama in Jackson Drift
Residents say what draws them to these specific EkasiNyama is the mustard spice Nokuthula uses on it.
YOUNG and old in Jackson Drift informal settlement queue in numbers to buy chicken feet, which residents have dubbed EkasiNyama, from Nokuthula Ngwane (30).
Residents say what draws them to these specific EkasiNyama is the mustard spice Nokuthula uses on it.
Nokuthula’s inspiration for selling chicken feet comes from her dream of owning her own ChesaNyama. Due to financial struggles, being unemployed and a mother of three, she opted to start this small chicken feet business. A small business which, by the looks of it, is not only popular with residents but is most certainly growing.
Her business has been thriving to the point where she now hires people to assist.
On Fridays, she has a special called the Family Full Meal which contains chicken feet and necks. She opens her EkasiNyama from 3pm until 7pm daily.
One of the regular customers said: “I love buying chicken feet here. It is really good and I always bring my friends to taste it.”
Nokuthula sells her chicken feet at R1 each, including sauce, spice and extra spice which makes people come back for more. She says the extra spice is a little love she shares with her customers.
“I always crave Nokuthula’s chicken feet. What I love is that she stood up and tried something to provide for her family. Most of the young women in the settlement sit and moan about being unemployed but she did something about it,” said Lebogang Moloi, a resident of the informal settlement.

Nokuthula said: “It makes me proud to see what I thought would last for two months has now become the biggest business in the settlement. I hope that one day I can finally achieve my goal of owning a ChesaNyama.”
