Police raid drug users at Junction and Diaz Mall in Rosettenville

Illegal occupants and drug users at Junction and Diaz Mall in Rosettenville are chased out by police.

MOFFAT View SAPS raided Junction and Diaz Mall in Rosettenville on November 30 to rid the premises of the drug users who were squatting there and frightening the community.

According to the SAPS, many crimes have been committed at the Junction by the drug users.

In an attempt to prevent these crimes from taking place, the SAPS ambushed users of nyaope, dagga and other drugs and confiscated their drugs.

The mall had been turned into a mini squatter camp of drug users, making residents too scared to pass by or go to the shops.

In October, a joint operation by law enforcement agencies cleared out the illegal occupants at Junction and Diaz Mall, but the occupants returned a week later, prompting the second raid.

Moffat View SAPS communications officer Jeff Phora said: “SAPS Moffat View has put measures in place to make Rosettenville and the surrounding areas safe. From now on we will conduct regular operations.”

About 13 nyaope users were arrested, while others fled. All the belongings of the nyaope users were burnt and discarded.

One resident said: “Seeing police doing their job pleases me a lot. This shows that they care about the community. Our children feared to pass by the Junction. At least now it’s all good.”
