Towering trees terrify Turffontein residents

Resident can't stand the long trees anymore

ALLEN Didloff from Turffontein is at his wits’ end because of the rows of tall trees that tower over his house from the pavement side in Alexander Street.

The trees have been a concern since he moved into his home in 2014. Huge branches keep breaking off and falling into his yard, leaving his boundary wall and garage in ruins.

When there are strong winds and heavy rains, the situation is all the more frightening, Didloff told the COURIER.

“These trees can collapse at any time and hurt my family. This isn’t good at all. How can City Parks leave trees to grow this high? Other residents are also affected by them,” said Didloff.

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “The trees frighten me because they can collapse and people can die, so just for safety reasons I think they should be removed.”

Didloff said he contacted City Parks and Ward 55 councillor Rashieda Landis, but no one heeded the call.

When the COURIER contacted Landis, she said City Parks had attended to the matter.

But the trees are still standing.

Didloff took a photo of a branch that fell onto his house on November 23. He said he called City Parks to have the branch removed immediately, but they only responded on November 26.

Didloff said he is not satisfied and he wants City Parks to remove the trees, not just the branches.

The COURIER contacted City Parks for comment. At the time of publishing, no comment had been received.
