Booysens informal settlement residents gets early Christmas lunch

The partnership with Meals on Wheels forms part of 3M’s 65-year celebration in South Africa.

3M South Africa, in conjunction with Meals on Wheels, gave away free meals to Booysens informal settlement residents on December 6.

The partnership with Meals on Wheels forms part of 3M’s 65-year celebration in South Africa. It is part of the company’s corporate social investment strategy which focuses on education, community development and environment.

3M started importing adhesive tapes into the country and business grew within a short space of time. The company then established its first manufacturing plant in SA.

“3M is committed to improving lives and building sustainable communities. That is why we have partnered with Meals on Wheels to serve thousands of meals in the said communities. Their work in the community embodies our purpose to make a real impact in communities,” said Devan Pillay, managing director of 3M South Africa.

Meals on Wheels focuses on four main areas – food security, poverty alleviation, self-sustainability and fund-raising. The organisation currently serves over two million meals a month to hungry South Africans.

“We are grateful for the contribution 3M has made in enabling us to do our work and improve the quality of life for our beneficiaries. With high incidents of poverty, we have found that younger women with children, orphans and child-headed households need our services. Contributions from corporations such as 3M enable us to do our work effectively,” said Gina Cohen, PR and marketing manager at Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels works to support disadvantaged members in different communities in the country, focussing on the poorest of the poor. The organisation provides skills development and empowerment opportunities to young people in need, helping them to become self-sustainable.

“3M continues to invest in the communities that are underprivileged through our 3Mgives initiatives globally. As we look back on our 65-year journey in South Africa, we remain committed to advancing community development,” added Pillay.
