New water pipes for Glenvista Ext 4

RESIDENTS in Glenvista Extension Four are asked to be patient over the next six months as Johannesburg Water upgrades and replaces the existing water pipes.
A public meeting was held on February 9, outlining plans for the upgrade. The meeting was headed by Ward 23 councillor Sarah Wissler, who introduced the contractors who will be involved, an environmental consultant, a representative from Joburg Water and site agent.
“The water pipes in this area have needed replacing for quite some time and this R10-million project should begin in the next week or two. This project will help improve the hydraulic capacity of the waterline and reduce the recurring burst pipes. The road infrastructure will be affected by work taking place over three phases. Phase one will include Laubscher Street, Vickery Avenue, Donington Drive and Kamstra Street. Phase two: Budack Avenue, Vallot Street, Dreyer Avenue, Eldrid Avenue and Flavia Place. Phase three includes Mogg Avenue, Leeuwen Street, Hoy Avenue, Janie Place and the other section of Donington Drive. One site office will be located on Kamstra Street and we are looking for another one in the area,” added Wissler.
“Residents can expect quite a bit of upheaval with the work being undertaken. A massive section of the pipe will run through the park from Kamstra to Laubscher with directional drilling being done under the river bed.”
She also said service delivery, including fibre and electricity, will be affected during weekdays and water cuts will take place.
“Glenvista and New South Residents Association (GANSRA) will be assisting to make sure the parks are kept clean and tidy and we will have a special WhatsApp group created for residents to be kept informed of what is going to happen. The contractors involved will be added to the group as well as site managers to mitigate any problems with electricity and fibre.
“Residents are advised to take photographs of their drives, gardens and pavements so after the work is finished they will be put back to look the same or better than before the work.”
The contractors added there will be seven days’ notice given for every water cut and water tanks will be provided for residents for lengthier cut-offs.

Environmental issues
Sheila Bolingo from Envirolution Consulting will be involved in identifying any problems with the wetlands and ecology.
“We’ll be keeping a close eye on the loss and disturbance of wetland habitat and fringe vegetation and in changes in water quality due to foreign materials and increased nutrients impact rating,” said Bolingo. “We will also identify any destruction of sensitive vegetation or destruction on natural habitat for fauna, as well as the destruction of protected plants and plants of conservation concern and a potential increase in invasive vegetation.”
“I’m very excited for this massive upgrade and I’m certain it’s going to run smoothly,” added Wissler.
