Springbok informal settlement residents speak out about service delivery
Residents were pleased to see Cllr Chame as they wasted no time addressing her about their grievances.
Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame visited Springbok informal settlement to listen to the residents’ complaints about lack of service delivery. The visit took place on February 24.
The residents were pleased to see Chame and wasted no time addressing her about their grievances. The grievances raised included the lack of electricity and mobile toilets in the area. They also complained about the lack of garbage bins, overgrown grass and lack of unemployment opportunities.
According to residents, overgrown grass provides a breeding place for rats and thugs who use it as hideout spot. The residents said they were provided with mobile toilets, but the population in the settlement far outstrips the number of toilets available to them.

The residents were concerned that having no bins would create health hazards.
Chame asked about the number of children who were not attending school. She asked why parents were not taking children to school. Some parents said they did not have documentation for the children while others provided torn documents.
The councillor promised to help the children to attend school.
“It pains me to see children not in school because our country depends on the young ones. Regarding bins and overgrown grass, I will contact relevant people to help. If residents are not assisted after a certain time, I will organise a day where I will come with tools, and together with residents we will clean up the whole place,” Chame said.

One resident, Sibusiso Lugoju, told the COURIER: “We as residents need to take a stand and clean up the settlement now and again. We live in this place and we must take care of it. Truth be said, the councillor has been taking care of us, giving us clothes and visiting us once and again.”
