Paradise in Jackson built from unwanted material
Residents dream to see themselves at Moloi's five-star house.
AMONG the shacks in Jackson informal settlement there is a place which could easily be called paradise.
This is the ‘five-star’ house of David Moloi.
David was born in the Free State and is a father of five. He came to Gauteng with a dream of growing his construction business, which he had to put on the back burner.
He arrived in Jackson in the early 2000s, lived in a one-roomed shack and was fortunate enough to find a job at a manufacturing company.
But his hands kept on itching to do what he was born to do. With his skills as a builder, he started collecting unwanted bricks, tiles, wood, pieces of fencing and other materials and built himself a house which, according to him, resembles a hotel or beach house. David said it took him four years to finish his house.

“People also come and ask me how I did it because in this area people have built their houses with corrugated iron. I pride myself on the fine art I have done,” said David.
It’s not just his house that is well maintained or built – the property also boasts a lush and well-kept garden, with his lawn being his pride and joy.
He waters his lawn every day in the morning before going to work. “My lawn is very attractive. When people are passing by they wish to come in and rest on it. I also tell people that keeping your yard beautiful shows self-love and respect,” said David.
Sphesihle Mbele, David’s neighbour, loves his yard, which is kept clean and tidy.
“When he was building his five-room house, it was like he was playing because he collected unwanted materials to make his five-star home.
“He motivates us as residents a lot. We are also pushed to do such a deed,” Sphesihle told COURIER.
