Making Joburg the place to be

Breakfast meeting for big five businesses.

AN action plan to make Joburg and surrounds the place to visit has been set in motion.

South of Joburg Business and Tourism (SOJO) hosted a business network breakfast meeting at Gold Reef City on April 5.

The purpose of this venture was for the big five hospitality providers of the South to meet, network and come up with a plan to work together and attract visitors from other provinces and outside the country.

The big five were Gold Reef City, Expo Centre Johannesburg, Mall of The South, Klipriviersberg Reservoir and Thaba Eco Hotel and Phumelele Racecourse.

All five had representatives who explained visions, missions and objectives of their entities. They were given an opportunity to promote and showcase their facilities as the attendees were taken on a tour to see these facilities and other southern areas.

SOJO invited tourism agencies like Gauteng Tourism, Joburg Tourism and South African Tourism to work with the big five.

Nicky Vakaloudis, SOJO CEO, said they want these entities to work together.

“We need to make the South the place to be because we shouldn’t work in isolation or in the shadows. I know from now on these five will work together. Each entity showed interest in the meeting, which is what I want,” said Vakaloudis.

Attendees were served breakfast from Gold Reef City and lunch from Thaba Eco Hotel.

“Hopefully we will meet the criteria that the tourism agencies are looking for in terms of capacity and how big events we can manage. This is the first phase of this initiative and the second phase will be around May when we will table a detailed action plan on how the big five will work together,” added Vakaloudis.
