BOOYSENS SAPS is offering the following tips to people:
• If you live alone, ask friends and family to phone you regularly. Build a friendly relationship with your neighbours so that you can call in the case of emergency.
• Draw money inside a bank and not at an outside ATM.
• Be very careful when you draw your pension money.
• Avoid walking in remote places.
• Do not carry large sums of money.
• Do not overload yourself with parcels as this makes you more vulnerable.
• Watch out if people start milling around you. This could be a sign that you are about to be robbed.
• Avoid bus stops where you have to wait on your own.
• Be aware of tricksters with promises that you can win a lot of money.
• Don’t resist, especially if the perpetrator has a weapon. Give up our vehicle, purse or valuables with no questions asked and move away.
• Do not be lured into a small passage, alley or backyard of a business complex by a seemingly honest person – even in broad daylight with people around.
• Limit your trips at night or at least take someone with you.
• If approached by a stranger while in your car, drive off if possible or lean on your horn to attract attention.
• Ensure that your vehicle always has sufficient fuel.
• Do not give strangers a lift.
• Never give your credit card details.
• If in doubt about the safety of an area, phone a police station for advice.
