NTOBEKO Tshuma (14) from Turffontein recently published a book with the help of Karabo Mogotlane, who also published a book a couple of moons ago.

The 14-year-old Zimbabwean-born writer had always wanted to write a book, but money was a hindrance. She has many scripts she has compiled since 2014, but needs a mentor to help her get her book to the shelves.

Ntobeko’s mother, who lives in Turffontein, learnt about Karabo’s recent successes, and reached out to him to help her daughter. He obliged, agreeing to meet up with the girl and assisting her to shipshape the language, construct paragraphs, improve grammar usage, punctuation, and most importantly, how to publish the book.

Ntobeko says writing is one of her interests which helps her to think deeply about issues.

Reflecting on her book, she told COURIER she went through tough times which nearly resulted in her giving up on her studies. She wrote this book hoping young people would draw lessons from her experiences.

A must read for youngsters

In her book titled I almost gave up but there was a lot to Consider, she reflects how young boys mistreated her and how she felt useless, unwanted and scared. She also writes about her upbringing and her family background, and how she was supported by it through difficult phases of her life.

Meanwhile, Karabo said he wishes to inspire others to become achievers. In his latest book Karabo-The Answer, he writes about how he seeks to help others to find answers to their pressing questions.

He said Ntobeko’s book is a must read for young people because most of them easily give up on their dreams.

Both Karabo and Ntobeko hope to see this book prescribed in schools, organisations, homes and elsewhere.

Karabo also helps out in one of the children’s homes in Kenilworth by providing children with food, clothes, toys and play time.

“What the future holds for Ntobeko is yet unknown, but with persistence and perseverance she will go far. All that I want is to see her making her mother proud, and changing circumstances of her family,” said Karabo.
