Little Bambi Nursery School subjected to stench from illegal dump site in Turffontein

Sue Davids, the owner of the nursery school, is worried that the stand is putting the children’s health in jeopardy.

THE owner and learners from Little Bambi Nursery School are fed up with the smelly and dirty vacant stand adjacent to their premises in Ferreira Street, Turffontein.

Sue Davids, the owner of the nursery school, is worried that the stand is putting the children’s health in jeopardy.

She told COURIER they tried cleaning the place, but after a few days people started dumping their rubbish there again.

“People come at night to dump their waste. My concern is the health hazard the place presents. We have to bear in mind that there’s a nursery school next door to it,” said Davids.

The stand is infested with rats, and people use the place to smoke.

According to Davids, the stand has been vacant for more than three years.

“I tried buying the place out, but I was told someone had already taken it.

“What worries me is that no one has attended to this smelly and dirty stand. Something must be done before someone’s health is compromised,” she explained.

She claimed she had tried contacting Ward 124 councillor Mongameli Mnyameni about the problem but received no response.

The COURIER ran a story last year about the stand under the headline Pre-school children put up with grime.

In that story, Mnyameni said he had asked the inspectors to visit the stand.

At the time, he added that he and his officials had been to the stand to have it cleaned.

However, Davids said the councillor never did arrive or attend to the stand.

The COURIER tried reaching Mnyameni for comment, but he wasn’t available.
