WATCH: Booysens Mask Dynamites to take the music industry by storm

The Booysens informal settlement-based group was established in 2017 by Thabo Mbaphela with the purpose of killing boredom as they are unemployed.

THE Mask Dynamites group are looking to take southern areas by storm with their music.

The Booysens informal settlement-based group was established in 2017 by Thabo Mbaphela with the purpose of killing boredom as they are unemployed. The group consists of four members with two members playing instruments and the other singing.

Every instrument they use is made with their bare hands.

The instruments they use is a drum made with rubber, wire, a bucket and bottle opener.

A saxophone and whistle are used to spice up their music.

The group believes their melody is one of kind and different to what people are used to.

They only sing Sesotho songs which they compose themselves.

Thabo said singing is their passion and everyone in the group enjoys what they are doing.

“We are unemployed so instead of looking at each other in the eyes we decided to start a group.

“People in the settlement enjoy our music. They don’t mind spending their time watching us doing what we do best.

“The music we sing is strictly Sesotho and that’s the only genre we can perform but as time goes by we want to explore other languages,” said Thabo.

At first, they did this just to keep themselves busy but now they know it is their destiny.

“Some people who are unemployed tend to blame the government for everything but we decided to stop nagging for free things and do things for ourselves,” Thabo added.

They haven’t recorded a single yet and they don’t have a recording company that they are working with.

The group wants to get gigs to perform at and put their name on the map and maybe in the near future record a few singles.

Some of the group members are in their mid-twenties and early thirties.

They all have families that rely on them and to support their families they depend on doing recycling and piece jobs.

The group can perform at birthdays, weddings, parties and traditional events. To get hold of them you can contact Thabo Mbaphela on 071 402 4567.\
