WATCH: Cornelia Park in Kenilworth spoilt by vagrants

One of the vagrants said he was chased away from where he lives and there’s nowhere he can go.

DIRT, rubble and makeshift shacks now characterises what once was Cornelia Park in Kenilworth because of vagrants who have taken over.

Situated at the corner of De Villiers and Lindhorst streets, the park now look more like an informal settlement than a public park.

Last year, Ward 124 Clr Mongameli Mnyameni tried to clean the park when there was one homeless person living there.

One of the vagrants with his belongings in the park.

But now there are several people living in the park.

One of the vagrants said he was chased away from where he lived and there’s nowhere he can go.

“I feel embarrassed to live like this, but I don’t have a choice. I was kicked out at my mother’s house by my stepfather and this was the only place I could find to live,” he said.

Mnyameni told him that the park is not suitable for people to live in. “It is illegal to live in a park. People need to find alternative places to live but not in the park. The park is supposed to be enjoyed by everyone in the community,” he said.
