Be successful in your business
“Get to know your clients before trying to sell them something. Lastly, serve your clients by following up.”
IMAGE, reputation and visibility have been shown by global studies to attribute 60 per cent to successful executives and the guest speaker at Woman of Stature (WOS) August meeting, Lianne Mitchley (Image at Work) explained how dressing for success can really set you aside in the work place.
The meeting was opened by Carrie Viviers (Hunter Group) who introduced Lianne to the members and guests.
“Your image is a symbol of your standards and a promise of your delivery,” said Lianne.
“People make a judgement of you within the first three minutes of meeting you on how you dress, how you behave, your body language and your voice. Visual impression (55 per cent), voice (35 per cent) and things you say (10 per cent).
“If you are invited to a smart/casual event, make sure to wear 70 per cent smart items and 30 per cent can be casual items. In your wardrobe 10 item must-haves are a trench coat, a pair of trousers, two skirts, four blouses and two dresses and try to make sure they are in neutral colours, such as tan and cream so they can all be interchanged.
“Prints are also good to wear but remember a small print is usually worn for smart occasions, while larger prints for casual wear. Tailored jackets are for smart wear and clothing with buckles and zips wear for a less smart occasion. Accessorise with high level good costume jewellery and the real thing for a smart occasion.
“In the work place don’t show too much flesh. Yes it can look sexy but it will lean towards making you appear stupid,” added Lianne.
She advised not to buy clothing in sales unless it’s absolutely what you are looking for. “It’s not a bargain unless it’s something which fits and suits you and you know 100 per cent you’ll wear it.”
Shereen Hunter (chapter leader for the new South Chapter Joburg West), thanked Lianne for her wise words.
“I think we’ve all learnt something ladies and can put this into practice when we are attending work or events.
“Thanks to Carrie for opening the meeting. It was her first time and she said she was very nervous. You’ll never do the thing you’re uncomfortable with until you do it.”
Shereen went on to say the benefits of joining Woman of Stature are phenomenal and the investment is of real value.
“As a PR specialist I’d advise you to invest in yourself. Don’t underestimate what a professional photograph can do for you and your business.”
She asked the women what the biggest problem is in their business or company and three of them voiced their concerns.
The main concern was how to begin a business with either none or very little money.
“It is possible but hard. You’ll have to connect professionally or socially and glean advice from other business women.
“If you have a small amount of money prepare a budget and get someone to mentor you. Work from home in the beginning and invest in skilled knowledge.
“Blog a lot on social media and visit your customers. Don’t hand out business cards for three months. Get off your bum and get out there.

“Get to know your clients before trying to sell them something. Lastly serve your clients by following up.”
The next WOS meeting will take place on September 4, at the Olive Tree Coffee Shop, Thaba Eco Hotel at 8am. For more information on the meeting or if you are interested in becoming a member of WOS, please phone Carrie Viviers on 064 753 8441.
