Protecting, promoting and enhancing natural assets

Overall, the aim is to work towards an appropriate spatial setting for the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, the “Jewel of the South”.

THE 10th AGM of the Klipriviersberg Sustainability Association (KlipSA) took place at St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Suideroord, on August 14.

The association aims to protect, promote and enhance the natural assets of the South of Johannesburg by encouraging development to be environmentally sensitive, sustainable, and to enhance food security and employment prospects in the area.

Overall, the aim is to work towards an appropriate spatial setting for the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, the “Jewel of the South”.

Chairperson Andrew Barker summarised the year’s activities, emphasising the close liaison with UJ and SOJO.

Focus areas have been water quality in the Klip River system and the Panorama Spruit, and the re-establishment of the Kliprivier Valley as a productive agricultural centre.

The association strives to be registered as an Interested and Affected Party for any proposed developments in the area, giving input into environmental protection, sustainability, and helping to ensure that correct processes are followed.

They also aims to liaise with like-minded organisations, to share experience and information.

The association has extremely limited resources and personnel, and would welcome anybody who has a passion for environmental issues and conservation to join them.

After the conclusion of the formal meeting, attendees were treated to a fascinating talk by Anthony and Helen Duigan, who recounted the crises and triumphs of their 30 years of conservation efforts in the Jukskei and Crocodile valleys, North-West of Johannesburg.
